Tablet Weaving
Ragnheiður Björk teaches the basic techniques of tablet weaving and how to create a variety of patterns using simple methods and tools. Tablet weaving is an ancient weaving technique that was widely practiced across Iceland centuries ago. Tablet weaving cards are used in the process; they are square with four holes through which yarn is threaded. By rotating the cards in different ways, intricate patterns are formed in the woven band.
The width of the bands depends on the number of cards, creating almost endless possibilities for pattern variations. Tablet weaving is an age-old craft that was brought to Iceland by settlers but has a history dating back as far as 3,000 years. Participants will set up their own weaving project according to a pattern and weave a band under Ragnheiður's guidance.
Tapestry Weaving
In tapestry weaving, participants will learn how to set up a loom for weaving. Two picture sizes will be worked on: 10 x 15 cm and 25 x 40 cm. Participants will start with a small tapestry, which takes two to three hours to complete, and then move on to a larger piece, which will be worked on for the remainder of the workshop.
Students will gain insight into various methods for creating sketches for weaving. They will learn to select threads for tapestry work and explore different types of yarn. Participants will also be introduced to a range of weaving techniques, including joins, color blending, and finishing woven pieces.
Participants are encouraged to bring:
- A belt for tablet weaving – used to anchor the warp threads for easier weaving.
- A larger tapestry frame (50-70 cm in height/width) for the larger tapestry. Those who bring their own frame can take their project home to complete it.
The school provides tapestry frames for loan during the workshop for the larger project, but these frames cannot be taken home. Therefore, participants are encouraged to plan their time and project scope to finish the tapestry during the course.
