This travel route really shines in the summer months, when the mountain roads are fully open and spectacular road trips beckon. Birds fill the bluffs and stunning walking trails give access to landscapes that are off-limits in winter.
Both the communities of Vopnafjörður and Borgarfjörður eystri are accessible year-round, but the mountain road between them (Rte 917 over Hellisheiði) is generally only open in summer, so this is the season to be wowed by the views over the long black-sand stretch of Héraðsflói bay.
Did you know that Austurland boasts some of the warmest summer temperatures in Iceland, and plentiful sunshine? Not surprisingly, this brings sun-seeking Icelanders to the region, keen for birdwatching, fishing, hiking, and long nights under the midnight sun.
Austurland buzzes with visitors and events. Restaurants are in full swing, and camping grounds swell. Outside Vopnafjörður, the 250-year-old turf-roofed farm Bustarfell is a folk museum where history comes alive through summertime storytelling and workshops. At Hafnarhólmi in Borgarfjörður esytri you can find some of the very best puffin watching in the country.
There’s enough to fill a few sunny days here: fish for trout close to Bustarfell, then check out the rock pillars and black-sand beaches in Vopnafjörður. Take a horse ride at Húsey farm and scout for seals, or hike to Stórurð, a remarkable area of giant boulders and grassy meadows on the route to Borgarfjörður eystri. Don’t miss the chance to swim at Selárdalurlaug pool, or enjoy a hot tub with a view at the spa in Borgarfjörður.
